Review: ‘Hunger Games’

I will say this about ‘Hunger Games’ — those of you who are already fans, will remain fans. With very minor changes to the original script, it stays true to portraying the actual story.

The casting was perfect. Jennifer Lawrence plays a great Katniss. She is detached from emotion, strong yet shy, just like described in the book. Josh Hutcherson played a very believable Peeta who is kind, gentle and visibly head over heels in love with Katniss. Elizabeth Banks and Woody Harrelson were the best choices for mentors. Willow Shields, who played Primrose (Katniss’ sister), stole the show during the reaping scene. Screaming, crying and desperately clinging to the life of her sister. All together, they were beyond impressive.

The visual effects were great. The capitol and it’s surroundings were believable and I caught myself in awe of the scenery multiple times. The woods, the fireball scene, the weapons and deaths were also very believable.

My biggest concern with ‘Hunger Games’ was that it wasn’t long enough and felt a little rushed. I understand they could not portray the entire book in two-hours and 10 minutes, but I loved the story so much, I would have volunteered to stay another hour in the theater. The beginning didn’t give Katniss and Gales relationship justice. The seriousness of the ending with the berries wasn’t played out long enough and the death scene with Cato should have ended in about 3 minutes, not 30 seconds. Neither Katniss or Peeta ever seemed in real danger, like in the book. Peeta’s leg wasn’t going to fall off and Katniss wasn’t dehydrated so much that she was about to die in the entire movie.

Another concern, and this is minor, the character’s weren’t skinny enough. If they were starving with weeks on end, they fooled me. Kantiss never looked hungry and barely hunted to feed herself. Another major difference from the book.

Overall, ‘Hunger Games’ is definitely worth a theater ticket. Those who haven’t read the book will become a fan. It’s PG-13 and very easy on the eyes when concerning blood and gore. The fight scenes were good and the story was emotional. Getitwhit liked it and is beyond excited for the next one!
